How to Crop a GIF in 3 Steps

1

Upload your GIF

Drag and drop or browse for a .gif file. Its width and height are detected automatically and the crop box is set to the full frame.

2

Set the crop area

Pick a ratio preset (1:1, 4:3, 16:9, 9:16) for a centered crop, or enter exact X, Y, width and height in pixels for full control.

3

Crop & download

Click Crop GIF, preview the result side by side, and download. The animation and loop are kept exactly as before.

Common Reasons to Crop a GIF

🟦 Square for emoji & avatars

Crop to 1:1 for Discord/Slack emoji, profile avatars, or sticker packs that require a square frame.

📱 Vertical & widescreen

Reframe to 9:16 for stories/reels or 16:9 for video thumbnails and embeds without re-recording.

🎯 Remove watermarks & borders

Trim off black bars, captions, or watermarks stuck to the edges of a downloaded GIF.

🗜️ Smaller files

Cropping away unused area lowers the pixel count and the file size — pair it with the compressor for tight limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I crop a GIF online?
Upload your GIF, and the cropper auto-detects its dimensions and sets a full-frame crop box. Pick an aspect ratio preset (1:1, 16:9, 9:16) or type exact X, Y, width, and height values in pixels, then click Crop GIF. Your cropped GIF previews instantly and is ready to download — all without leaving your browser.
Does cropping a GIF reduce its quality?
No. Cropping removes pixels from the edges but does not re-compress the pixels that remain, so the kept area keeps its original quality and animation timing. Because the canvas is smaller, the cropped GIF is also usually a smaller file. If you need an even smaller file, run it through our GIF compressor afterwards.
Can I crop an animated GIF without breaking the animation?
Yes. The same crop rectangle is applied to every frame, so the animation, loop, and frame delays are fully preserved — only the visible area changes. This is true for any number of frames.
Is my GIF uploaded to a server?
Never. All cropping runs locally in your browser using WebAssembly (ffmpeg.wasm). Your file is not uploaded, stored, or transmitted, and everything is cleared from memory when you close the tab.
How do I crop a GIF to a square or for Discord?
Click the 1:1 preset to get a centered square crop, then fine-tune the X/Y offset if needed. For Discord emoji or stickers, crop to a square first, then use our GIF resizer to scale it to the required size (e.g. 128×128) and the compressor to fit the file-size limit.
